Painting ceramic plates is one of the most popular activities in our workshop. If you have painted mugs and now want to try plates, or if it is your first time and you are looking for inspiration, you are in the right place. Ceramic plates have a large, flat surface that lends itself well to designs that would not fit on a mug. More space to experiment, more possibilities to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are 28 ideas sorted by style. Choose the one that appeals to you the most \u2013 or combine two that you like and create your own version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ideas for the edge of the plate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The edge of a plate is like the frame of a painting: well decorated, it makes the whole thing have much more presence. And the great advantage of working only on the edge is that the center remains clean and the plate turns out very elegant without much effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Dotted border<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A row of evenly sized dots along the entire edge. You can make them all the same color or alternate two. Simple, clean and very effective. For more personality, combine large and small dots in an irregular pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Striped edge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Short radial stripes, like the rays of a sun, from the edge towards the center. Or parallel stripes that run along the perimeter. They work very well in earthy colors: terracotta, olive green, petrol blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Zigzag edge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A continuous zigzag line around the plate. It looks very clean and modern, especially in black on white or in a single dark color on a light background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Small leaf border<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Small oval leaves spread along the edge, all pointing towards the center of the plate. A very elegant result with just one color of paint and a medium-sized brush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Edge of the waves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A continuous wavy line that runs the entire perimeter. You can make one single one or two parallel ones. The waves in blue on white give a very Mediterranean result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Minimalist geometric border<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Small triangles, squares or diamonds evenly distributed along the edge. It looks very clean and contemporary. The trick is to keep the spacing between each shape even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Botanical designs for ceramic plates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Botanical is perhaps the style that looks best on a large plate. The branches, leaves and flowers adapt very well to the circular surface and give a result that looks very elaborate but is actually quite accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Central branch with leaves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A thin branch that crosses the plate diagonally, with oval leaves on both sides. You can paint the branch dark brown and the leaves sage green. One of the most popular designs in the workshop and one of the best as a gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Flower crown<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A circle of flowers and leaves that surrounds the center of the plate. You can leave the center blank or write something in it. The flowers don't have to be perfect \u2013 in fact, they look better if each one is slightly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Monstera and tropical leaves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A large monstera leaf in the center of the plate, with some smaller leaves around it. In dark green on white it looks very striking. If you want to simplify it as much as possible, a single very stylized monstera leaf in the center is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Aromatic herbs with names<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Each plate with a different herb painted and its name written on the side in small letters. Thyme, rosemary, basil, lavender. A perfect idea if you want to make a set of serving dishes with personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Scattered wildflowers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Daisies, anemones and simple five-petal flowers distributed across the surface of the plate in an irregular shape. The size of the flowers varies and the result is very cheerful and spring-like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Cactus and succulents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A cylindrical cactus in the center of the plate, surrounded by schematically painted stones and sand. Or several small succulents distributed over the surface. Very popular among those looking for a different and modern result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plates with fruits and foods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fruit works especially well on plates because the shapes are simple, the colors are bright, and the result is always very festive. Plus, if the plate is going to be in the kitchen, a fruit design gives it a lot of coherence with the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Mediterranean style lemons<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yellow lemons with green leaves spread all over the surface. A classic that never goes out of style, especially on a white or light blue background. The trick is to paint the lemons in an oval shape, not perfectly round, and add a white line to simulate light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Cherries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pairs of red cherries joined by a thin stem. Scattered across the surface or concentrated at the edge. A very easy design with a lot of visual impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Figs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Figs cut in half showing the pink interior and the seeds. A very popular design for its artistic aesthetic. They look extraordinarily good in earthy colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16. Strawberries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Red strawberries with green leaves on top and white dots on the surface. A very direct and uncomplicated design that always looks good, especially on dessert plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17. Grapes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A cluster of circles stacked in a triangle shape, with a leaf and a tendril. In purple or green on a white background, or the other way around. Perfect for wine and cheese serving dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geometry and repetitive patterns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you want a modern, clean and timeless result, geometric designs and repetitive patterns are the best option. Also, on a large plate, the repetition of a simple shape creates a very striking effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18. Concentric circles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Several circles from the center to the edge, in colors that go from light to dark or in alternating colors. It looks very elegant and is one of the easiest designs to execute if you use the center of the plate as a reference point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

19. Spiral<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A spiral that starts in the center and opens towards the edge. In a single thin line on a white background it gives a very minimalist result. If you make it thicker and tweeze it with color, the effect is much more expressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20. Hydraulic tile stamping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Divide the plate into zones and paint the same geometric motif on each. It looks very complex but it's actually just a matter of repeating the same shape. It works great in blue and white, or green and ochre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

21. Simplified Mandala<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It doesn't have to be a complex mandala. With a central circle, some petals around it and some dots, you have a piece that looks very well-made. The trick is symmetry \u2013 take the time to distribute the elements in a balanced way around the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

22. Scales or half circles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Rows of overlapping half circles that cover the entire surface of the plate, like the scales of a fish or the tiles of a roof. One of the designs that generates the most visual impact with the simplest technique. Start with the outer row and work towards the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dishes with text and messages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A plate with words is always very personal. Unlike cups, where the text is on the side, on a plate the text goes in the center and is the first thing you see when the food is hidden. A perfect space for a message, a name or a phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

23. A single word in the center<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A large word in the center of the plate, in block letters. "Bon profit", "Casa", "Always", the family name... Simple and very effective. It goes very well with a border decorated with dots or stripes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

24. A short quote or phrase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A phrase written in a spiral from the center to the edge, or in horizontal lines in the middle of the plate. It works best with short phrases \u2013 no more than 8-10 words \u2013 because the available space, although large, has limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

25. Special date or year<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A year, a wedding date, a child's first birthday... In large numbers in the center of the plate, with some simple decorative element around it. A unique and completely personalized wedding or birthday gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressive and abstract<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you don't want to follow any pattern or rule, expressive is for you. On a large plate, free brushstrokes and bold colors create unique pieces that no one else will have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

26. Free brushstrokes in two colors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Choose two colors that look good together \u2013 green and terracotta, blue and ochre, black and white \u2013 and paint broad, spontaneous strokes across the surface. Don't think about them, do them quickly. The result is always surprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

27. Colored background with white details<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Paint the entire surface of the plate a dark color \u2013 bottle green, navy blue, black, terracotta \u2013 and add white details on top: dots, lines, small flowers. The effect is very dramatic and elegant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

28. Asymmetric color block<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Divide the plate into two unequal areas \u2013 for example one third and two thirds \u2013 and paint each area a different color. Leave an irregular line between the two areas to avoid it looking too mechanical. Minimal, modern and very photogenic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
