Don’t worry, it happens a lot. In fact, it is one of the questions almost everyone asks us when they arrive for the first time at La Pintoràmica.

The good news is that ceramic mugs are very forgiving. They are small pieces with comfortable surfaces to work on, and the designs that look best are often the simplest. You don’t need to have painted before. You just need a bit of inspiration, and that’s why we have gathered here 30 ideas sorted by style and difficulty.

Take your time, choose whatever you like, and remember that in the end you take home a mug you made yourself. That is already a lot.

Geometric designs: lines, dots and shapes

If you don’t see yourself drawing flowers or animals, geometric designs are your best friend. You only need a fine brush, a bit of patience, and the desire to repeat shapes. The result is usually very clean and modern.

1. Horizontal stripes

Two or three colored stripes around the body of the mug. Simple, clean, and it always looks good. Try combining a dark and a light color, or make three thin stripes in the same color but with different thicknesses.

2. Dots of varying sizes

Large and small dots scattered across the surface, with no apparent order. You can make them all the same color or combine two or three. The classic polka dot effect is foolproof and looks great even if the dots aren’t perfectly round.

3. Grids and crosses

A grid of intersecting lines creates a fabric-like effect that looks very elaborate but is very easy to make. First mark the vertical lines with a dry brush over the damp surface to have a guide, and draw the lines with confidence.

4. Triangles and arrows

A row of triangles around the upper rim of the mug, or arrows all pointing in the same direction. They work very well in a single color on a white background, or the other way around: a colored background with white triangles.

5. Concentric circles at the bottom of the mug

When someone drinks from the mug, they will see the circles. A small but very beautiful detail. You can make them in a gradient from the lightest color to the darkest toward the center.

6. Little mice or scales

Overlapping semicircles that imitate fish scales or roof tiles. It looks complicated, but it is just a matter of repeating the same shape. I recommend starting with the bottom row and working your way upwards.

Botanical style: leaves, branches and simple flowers

Botanical style is perhaps the most popular in ceramics workshops. Leaves and branches seem difficult but are actually very forgiving: a long brushstroke is already a leaf, two lines coming out of a branch are already vegetation. It doesn’t need to be perfect; in fact, it looks better if it isn’t.

7. Eucalyptus branch

A central branch with oval leaves on the sides. You can paint the branch in dark brown or grey and the leaves in sage green or dark green. A classic that never goes out of style and looks great on mugs for gifting.

9. Flors silvestres i margarides

Un cercle al centre i pètals al voltant. Les margarides petites escampades per tota la tassa donen un resultat molt alegre i primaveral. Varia una mica la mida de les flors perquè no quedin massa uniformes.

10. Cherry blossom branch (Japanese style)

A thin and slightly twisted branch with small five-petal flowers. It can be done with a fine brush and is perfect if you like Japanese minimalist aesthetics. The secret is that the branch should not be straight.

11. Aromatic herbs

Thyme, rosemary, lavender… Thin stems with small leaves or little flowers. You can write the name of the herb next to it in small lettering. It’s a very popular idea for gift mugs, especially if the person you’re giving it to enjoys cooking.

12. Cactus and succulents

A cylindrical cactus with dotted spines, or a succulent with thick leaves. They work very well with a soft-colored background (pale pink, mint green, soft yellow) and the cactus in dark green.

Repetitive patterns: the technique that hides mistakes

If there is one thing ceramics forgive very well, it is imperfection within a repeating pattern. When you repeat the same shape many times, small variations give character to the design instead of looking like mistakes.

13. Checkered pattern

Alternating squares in two colors, like a chessboard. It looks retro and modern at the same time. It works very well in black and white, in blue and white, or in any combination of light and dark colors.

14. Waves and zigzags

Wavy or zigzag lines that run around the entire circumference of the mug. You can make one in the middle, three parallel ones, or fill the whole mug from top to bottom. It is one of the quickest designs to execute.

15. Dot grid (Yayoi Kusama style)

If you like contemporary art, large colored dots on a contrasting background give a very striking result. Take inspiration from Kusama’s pumpkins: yellow background with black dots, or red background with white dots.

16. Hydraulic tiles

Imitating a hydraulic tile pattern on a mug is a fun challenge. The trick is to divide the body of the mug into rectangles and repeat the same motif in each rectangle. It doesn’t need to be perfect — the charm is that it looks handmade.

17. Petals or semicircles in a fan shape

Like scales but inverted: semicircles that open upward, in colors ranging from light to dark or in alternating colors. It is reminiscent of traditional Portuguese ceramics and looks very good on a warm-colored mug.

Abstract and expressive: for those who want total freedom

If the geometric style feels too rigid and the botanical too representational, the abstract style is for you. Here there are no rules and “imperfection” is part of the result. Often the mugs made by clients who have painted the least end up being the most beautiful.

18. Free brushstrokes in a single color

Take the widest brush you have, load it well with paint, and make spontaneous brushstrokes across the body of the mug. Don’t think about them, just do them quickly. The result is always surprising, especially if you choose a dark color on a white background or vice versa.

19. Color block in two halves

Simply paint the lower half of the mug in a solid color and leave the upper half white (or vice versa). Minimal, elegant, and very photogenic. It works especially well in earthy colors: terracotta, olive green, petrol blue.

20. Watercolor-style color stains

Apply a first layer of color and before it fully dries add stains of another color. The paints mix slightly and create an effect that resembles watercolors. The result is always different and always beautiful.

21. Vertical gradient (ombré)

From solid color at the top to very diluted color or white at the bottom, or vice versa. It requires a bit of technique but the result is very elegant. The trick is that ceramic paints can be diluted with water to achieve the gradient.

22. Stone or marble texture

With a dry brush and little paint you can create texture effects that imitate stone or marble. Run the dry brush from top to bottom with irregular movements to create veining. It works very well in greys and whites, or in black on white.

With text: letters, words and messages

A mug with a written message is always a personal and unique gift. You don’t need perfect handwriting — in fact, “imperfect” handmade lettering has much more value than any printed typeface.

23. The person’s name

The most personal gift you can give: a mug with the name of the person who will receive it, in large lettering in the centre of the mug or in small, discreet lettering under the rim. It works well combined with a simple botanical element around it.

24. A short meaningful phrase

“Good morning”, “Coffee first”, “Here begins the day”… A phrase that represents the person the mug is intended for. Write it in block letters, not cursive, as it is much easier to make neat.

25. The year, a date, or coordinates

For anniversaries or commemorations: the year in large numbers in the centre, or the GPS coordinates of a special place. It works very well combined with a simple geometric design around it.

26. Large initial letter monogram style

A single large letter in the centre of the mug. You can decorate it with botanical elements, surround it with dots, or simply leave it alone. Monograms on ceramics always look very elegant.

Themed and seasonal

If you have a specific occasion in mind or simply want to express something you really like, themed designs are usually the ones that bring the most joy once the mug is at home.

27. Celestial and astronomical: moons, suns and stars

Half moon, stars of varying sizes, and a stylized sun. They work very well in navy blue on a white background, or in gold (which in ceramics is achieved with special paints) on a dark background. One of the designs we are seeing most often lately in the workshop.

28. Stylized animals

A cat, a bird, a dog, a whale… If you have a favourite animal or a pet, putting it on the mug is always a success. It doesn’t need to be realistic — in fact, highly simplified animals (almost icons) look much better on ceramics.

29. Fruits and food

Lemons, cherries, strawberries, figs… Fruits work very well because the shapes are simple and the colors are bright. Lemons on a sky-blue background is a classic combination that never fails, and it is very easy to make.

30. Minimalist landscape

A simple horizon line with a mountain, a pine tree, or a setting sun. It may seem complicated, but if you simplify it as much as possible — literally lines and basic shapes — the result is very poetic. It works very well if you want to remember a special place.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex practical notes for when you start painting:

Bring a reference. A photo on your phone of the design you want to make is much better than trying to remember it. It doesn’t need to be exactly the same — any image that inspires you will do.

Start with the main elements, not the details. First the large shapes, then the fine lines. If you start with the details and make a mistake, it is very difficult to correct.

Colors on ceramics change during firing. When you apply them they look very dull and earthy, but once glazed and fired they come to life. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look like much while you are painting.

Less is more. The mugs that customers like most are usually the simplest ones. Let the mug breathe — there is no need to fill every centimetre of surface.

Don’t erase with your fingers. If you make a mistake, ask the team — there are ways to fix it without ruining the piece.

Enjoy the process. The final result matters, but the afternoon you spend painting is just as important. Don’t obsess over perfection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to know how to draw to paint ceramics?

No. Most designs that work best in ceramics are the simplest: dots, lines, geometric shapes, or free brushstrokes. You don’t need to know how to draw — in fact, many times the result is better when you don’t try to be too precise.

What paints are used to paint ceramic mugs?

In workshops like La Pintoràmica, specific ceramic paints are used which, once glazed and fired in a high-temperature kiln, become permanent, food-safe and dishwasher-safe. It is not the same as acrylic paints used at home, which do not withstand firing. How long does it take for a painted mug to be ready at the workshop?

Once you finish painting it, we apply the transparent glaze and put it in the kiln. In about 3 days it is ready to be picked up at the Gràcia or El Born workshop, where you did the session.

Can you come to the workshop without having any design idea?

Absolutely. The La Pintoràmica team helps you find the design that fits what you like. You have the whole session to try, experiment, and change your mind. There is no need to come prepared with anything.

What is the price of a mug at the workshop?

The price depends on the mug you choose. We have mugs available from €15, and the price includes the piece, all materials, glazing, and firing.
