Painting ceramics as therapy: guide to the “mental reset” in 100 minutes

Plats pintats artesanalment a la Pintoràmica

Why painting ceramics works against stress (and boosts focus and self-esteem)

Stress: from noise to active silence

If you want to calm your mind, painting ceramics is a mental reset. In just a few minutes, you’ll notice the noise decreasing and your focus increasing until you feel “I’m okay here”. Moreover, the act of loading, resting, and gliding the brush is repetitive and predictable; therefore, it helps regulate breathing and anchor you in the present.

Focus: gentle attention that doesn’t drain

When you follow the curve of a mug or the relief of a plate, your gaze focuses without tension. On the other hand, the background world fades, and a gentle, sustained focus emerges.

Self-esteem: the moment “did we really make this?”

At the end of the piece, tangible pride arrives. As a result, self-esteem rises. However, if an unexpected event occurs, it often becomes your favorite detail: making mistakes is part of the process and can be creatively reinterpreted.

Practical tips that enhance the effect

  • Chosen limitation: working on a pre-made piece (mug, bowl, plate) reduces decisions and, therefore, brings calm.
  • Short rhythms: if you divide by areas (rim, body, base), you’ll see visible progress; consequently, you’ll feel motivated.
  • Intentional color: starting with 2–3 tones reduces decision anxiety and facilitates flow.

What your Pintoràmica session is like: 100 minutes to feel “good here”

Step 1 — Choose your piece (5–10 min)

In general, you’ll choose a piece based on time and detail. For first visits, a mug or bowl works very well.

Step 2 — Design without pressure (10–15 min)

You can sketch with a ceramic pencil or start directly with simple shapes (stripes, dots, flowers, waves). Also, try this guideline: paint as if it’s already right.

Step 3 — Paint without fear of mistakes (60–70 min)

You’ll work with Stroke & Coat (registered trademark), which allows layers and fine details. If an unexpected event occurs, turn it into a resource; therefore, the mistake stops being a threat and becomes an opportunity.

Step 4 — Kiln and wrap-up (5 min)

You’ll leave the piece for firing at 1100 ºC. Finally, everything will be ready for pickup.

Step 5 — Pickup

The pieces can be picked up after 3 days; you’ll be notified by email when they are ready. In fact, seeing the color after firing is the second big joy of the process.

Materials and safe process: Stroke & Coat, ceramic pencils, and firing at 1100 ºC

Paints and tools

  • Stroke & Coat (registered trademark): intense, opaque colors, ideal for layering and creating fine details.
  • Ceramic pencils: for lines, letters, and preliminary outlines; unlike ink, they do not interfere with the glaze.

Firing and safe use

  • Firing at 1100 ºC: seals and vitrifies. As a result, the pieces are dishwasher-safe and food-safe.

Practical tip

Less is more: with two brushes (fine and medium) and three well-chosen colors, you’ll get consistent and, above all, relaxing results.
